ABOUT ZZ TOP
Profoundly American, and staunchly blues-derived, the gritty Texas sound of that
"little ol' band from Texas" ZZ Top has been a staple of classic rock
radio, FM AOR stations, and backyard barbecues for three decades. Guitarist Billy
Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard have weathered many trends
across that span and have emerged as rock 'n' roll institutions, ever-improving
musicians and titillating personalities. Formed in 1970 outside of Houston, Beard,
Hill, and Gibbons came together with a love for the blues of their homeland, and
a unanimous appreciation for Jimmy Vaughan. Together, on the strength of their
mutual respect for boogie and blues, the band began to hone their chops. Their
first three albums were solid sets of raw blues power, culminating in the fine
Tres Hombres, and the band's first single and subsequent classic rock staple,
"La Grange". From there, the '70s grew to be the band's most successful
decade, with consistently good musical output and a fast-growing fanbase. By the
time the band did Deguello in 1979, they were selling out arenas and receiving
significant airplay with songs like "Tush" and "Cheap Sunglasses."
