ABOUT WHITE ZOMBIE
If you look and listen closely, you can catch a glimpse of art school looming
behind White Zombie's pyrotechnics. Though Rob Zombie's magnificent musical monstrosities
have never garnered the critical legitimacy of say, Trent Reznor, it's not for
lack of talent or vision. More ominous than angst-ridden, the White Zombie experience
(think Walt Disney channeling the spirits of Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper and Russ
Meyer) is packed with more chills and thrills than an Addams Family theme park.
Formed in New York City in 1985, White Zombie's early work (two discontinued albums
on Caroline Records: Soul Crusher and Make Them Die Slowly), though brimming with
portent of things to come, was merely a dress rehearsal for their major label
debut. Between moving to Los Angeles and signing with Geffen Records, Zombie worked
as a set designer on Pee Wee's Playhouse--one more ingredient for the musical
gumbo stewing in his head. La Sexorcisto: Devil Music, Vol. 1 frappes a whole
slew of appealing elements together: Big fat grooves, chunky metal riffage, campy
samples, dollops of tasteful electronics and comic book imagery (in graphics and
song) that crackles and pops. Sexorcisto's successor, Astro-Creep 2000, was all
of this and more.
