ABOUT VENUS HUM
Although they were loosely tied in with the US "electro-clash" movement of the early twenty-first century, this Nashville, Tennessee-based trio's atmospheric and melodic music draws on UK electro-pop rather than the harsh, abrasive sounds of electro-clash, and demonstrates even less affinity with their adopted home-town's rich country tradition.
The three members of Venus Hum, Annette Strean (b. Montana, USA; vocals), Kip Kubin (b. New Jersey, USA; keyboards) and Tony Miracle (b. Ohio, USA; multi-instruments), made their respective ways down to Nashville in the mid-90s. They teamed up at the end of the decade and began making music in Miracle's basement studio. Taking their unusual name from a rare medical condition suffered by Miracle in which he can hear the blood rushing through his pulmonary artery, Venus Hum released their self-titled debut in 2001. Their lush dream-pop soon caught the attention of electroclash pioneer Larry Tee who invited the trio to perform at his Electroclash Festival in New York City in summer 2002, and a major label recording contract with MCA Records was not long in following. A support slot with Stereolab in Nashville preceded a joint US tour with Sing-Sing. Venus Hum's MCA debut, Big Beautiful Sky, was released in April 2003.
