ABOUT TOPLOADER
The retro sensibilities of this Eastbourne, East Sussex, England-based quintet
found a surprisingly appreciative audience on the new millennium's UK music scene,
with their melodic and funky psychedelic rock sound providing brief lightweight
relief from the omnivalent hordes of teen pop divas and urban dance acts. The
band, formed in 1997, comprises Joseph Washbourn (b. 24 December 1975, Sidcup,
Kent, England; keyboards/vocals), Dan Hipgrave (b. 5 August 1975, Brighton, East
Sussex, England; guitar), Matt Knight (b. 18 November 1972, Portsmouth, Hampshire,
England; bass), Rob Green (b. 24 October 1969, London, England; drums), and Julian
Deane (b. 31 March 1971, Bristol, Avon, England; guitar). The quintet first made
a mark on the local circuit, with the extravagantly coiffured Washbourn, singing
affected-American lead vocals while seated at his keyboard in the centre of the
stage, a charismatic focal point. The band signed to the Sony S2 label the following
year, and supported Paul Weller on his UK tour.
