ABOUT THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS
Oft-called the best-educated band in the world, keyboardist John Linnell and guitarist
John Flansburgh--the self-styled "twin quasars of rock"--have earned
the title. Inevitably described as quirky, the Brooklyn-based duo (now a full
band) have hewn a career out of wordplay, paranoia, wide-ranging sampling and
a musical style that's embraced just about everything worth embracing. Linnell
and Flansburgh met while working together on their high school paper in the mid-'70s
and ended up forming their two-man band, named for the George C. Scott movie of
the same name. Experimentalists from the get-go, the pair spent endless hours
honing their material in their apartment, playing downtown Manhattan and the East
Village during the early '80s. Rhythm sectionless, they compensated with synths
and drum samples and their uncanny ear for the weird. They signed with indie Bar
None, which released their eponymous debut and Lincoln, exemplary early work,
before the duo moved to Elektra with their only million-selling disc to date,
the remarkable Flood.
