ABOUT THE DEFTONES
Childhood friends Chino Moreno (vocals), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), and Abe Cunningham
(drums) came together in 1988, at a time when Sacramento's music scene was in
dire need of some rejuvenation. The then-high school students invested some serious
money into their equipment after Carpenter collected a huge car accident settlement
and they played locally and changed bass players several times before inducting
Chi Cheng as their permanent bassist. However, the lack of proper local outlets
to unfurl their early heavy metal-based sound led them to tour throughout the
Bay Area as well as Reno and Los Angeles, consequently expanding their fanbase.
