ABOUT THE DARKNESS
Justin Hawkins grew up in Suffolk in the town of Lowestoft in England. He and his kid brother, Dan, used to have a covers band with Dan being the lead vocalist. In 1997, Justin left home to attend a Univeisity in Huddersfield. Meanwhile, Dan moved to London hoping to find a band to join. It was there that Dan met Frankie Poullain. Poullain had been exiled from Scotland and claims that his father is a West Indies pirate. The two shared a flat in Shephard’s Bush. One of Justin and Dan’s friend from home, drummer Ed Graham, would come to the flat and play on weekends. The two brothers and Frankie soon joined a short lived Punk band called Empire. Justin soon got into heavier music and Frankie moved away to Venezuela. On December 31, 1999 Justin and Dan were in a Norfolk pub enjoying New Year’s Eve and debating what to do with their future. Justin entered a karaoke competition in which he sang “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Soon after, the two brothers were inspired to create a band and be serious about it. Thus, the Darkness was formed. The group consisted of Justin, Dan, Ed, and Frankie (who came back from Venezuela). The Darkness began touring and received a devoted following in West London. They decided to create music that would make people happy. Their debut single, “I Believe In a Thing called Love,” has received a lot of attention from MTV.
