ABOUT THE CHARLATANS
The quintet was formed in Northwich in the late '80s and scored its first hit in 1990 with "The Only One I Know," which added Hammond organ to the then-prevailing Stone Roses/Manchester recipe of pairing '60s guitar sounds with '90s dance beats. It was also notable for lifting its familiar hook from Deep Purple's "Hush." Like Blur, the Charlatans progressed from these none-too-impressive origins to become a genuinely involving band with a focus on Tim Burgess's voice and Rob Collins's organ. (The group was forced to add the "U.K." to its name in the States to avoid confusion with the San Francisco band that got to the name first in the '60s.)
