ABOUT SUM 41
Green Day paved the road, Blink 182 pranced along it in the nude, and now Sum
41 are taking over the pop-punk world with refreshing puerile energy. Deryck "Bizzy
D" Whibley (vocals/guitars), Steve "Stevo32" Jocz (drums), Dave
"Brownsound" Baksh (guitar), and Jay "Cone" McCaslin (bass)
were members of rival bands in Ajax, Ontario until they joined forces in 1997,
41 days into the summer before their final year of high school--hence their moniker.
After building a buzz in the local scene, the barely legal quartet was close to
signing a deal with a Canadian indie label Aquarius, until Island Records interceded:
Impressed by the band's electronic press kit of energetic live performances and
random footage of humorous supersoaker drive-bys, Island signed Sum 41 in late
'99 and released their first EP, Half Hour Of Power, in 2000.
