ABOUT SUGAR RAY
The out-of-leftfield hit, "Fly," that made Southern California band
Sugar Ray famous was by all standards a real dose of serendipity. After all, this
is a band that has never taken themselves terribly seriously, did about a thousand
things destined to kill them in the Book Of Rock Credibility, and just plain didn't
seem to give a you-know-what. By singer Mark McGrath's own admission in interviews,
"We just got lucky." McGrath perhaps is a bit more astute than he lets
on, however. Sugar Ray's 10-year climb to success is littered with seemingly silly
missteps that, upon examination, point toward the inevitable. Growing up with
bandmates Rodney Sheppard, Murphy Karges and Stan Frazier in Orange County's Newport
Beach--the affluent, whitebread representative in a varied region that includes
ska central Anaheim and hardcore station Huntington Beach--McGrath decided in
his teens that he wanted to be a rock star. He got together with guitarist Sheppard
and drummer Frazier, who at the time were in the last throes of a band called
the Tories, and began to form a subliminal plan for success.
