ABOUT STYX
The name Styx has become synonymous with all that was lame about '70s mainstream
rock. In truth, they weren't that bad--but they weren't that good either. Styx
began life as a sincere but clumsy take on British prog-rock, a lowbrow middle-American
answer to Yes and Genesis. It was only in the later part of their career, when
they had their greatest success with ballads, that Styx went from mediocre to
cringe-inducing. Styx's first hit single "Lady" (from 1973's Styx) was
a decent-enough tune that suggested a more bombastic version of the Hollies; lead
singer Dennis DeYoung had a reedy voice that wasn't too far removed from Allan
Clarke's. Their early albums were devoted to artsy suites that aped the British
prog sound without the finesse, but they were sufficient for building an underground
following. With the arrival of Peter Frampton lookalike guitarist Tommy Shaw in
1976, the band took on a poppier approach; the following year brought the breakthrough
hit album The Grand Illusion. The most-airplayed track, "Come Sail Away"
had some Yes overtones, but it really suggested what might have happened if Billy
Joel had taken more drugs and read The Hobbit.
