ABOUT STONE TEMPLE PILOTS
No matter what they do, some bands just can't seem to get any respect. Stone Temple
Pilots are one of those bands. After they were initially written off as Pearl
Jam clones, STP went on to become one of the most commercially successful new
rock acts to emerge in the '90s. STP, which consists of singer Scott Weiland,
guitarist Dean DeLeo, his brother Robert on bass, and drummer Eric Kretz, emerged
from L.A. in a cloud of record company hype and a radio-ready "grunge"
sound. The band's 1992 debut, Core, spawned a number of radio hits, including
the ambiguous rape-fantasy rocker "Sex Type Thing," the hook-filled
"Plush," and the somber ballad "Creep," and went on to become
a multi-platinum seller. Nonetheless, the Pilots still had trouble being taken
seriously. On their second album, perhaps hoping to deflect some of the criticism,
singer Weiland started using his first name again, and the band loosened up.
