ABOUT SOUNDGARDEN
Though they've often been lumped into the "grunge" category for convenience's
sake, Soundgarden, in fact, predated by several years the grunge explosion set
off in 1991 with the release of Nirvana's Nevermind and Pearl Jam's Ten, and survived
long after "grunge" had become something of a, er, dirty word in rock
crit circles. Formed in 1984 (though they wouldn't hit the studio for few years),
Soundgarden's earliest efforts were intriguing, idiosyncratic experiments in hybridization
that blended punk grime with powerful rhythms and just about anything else that
struck the quartet's fancy. It wasn't until they left the indie world in 1989,
however, that Soundgarden really focused their style. Though they could generate
the same sense of grandeur as Zeppelin, they packed a nervy edge and savvy sarcasm
that Zep never had, and with input from producers Terry Date and Michael Bienhorn,
it coalesced into dense, piquant sound.
