ABOUT SOUL ASYLUM
Soul Asylum has the distinction of being the only band to emerge from the '80s
Minneapolis indie rock scene, which also spawned the Replacements and Husker Du,
to go on to mainstream fame. Yet success often comes with a price, as Soul Asylum's
1993 commercial breakthrough left many of their old fans cold. With its 1984 debut
Say What You Will..., produced by Husker Du's Bob Mould, Soul Asylum initially
seemed like a pale combination of Husker Du and the Replacements. While the band
wasn't incredibly original at this point, it managed to capture the energy and
spirit of both. What a change a few years makes. By 1986, Soul Asylum had moved
from the shadow of their hometown cohorts (although Mould was still producing).
The hard-rocking Made To Be Broken showed that Soul Asylum were real contenders
to the alternative rock throne. In guitarists Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy, the
band had two capable songwriters and vocalists (although Pirner usually took the
lead role), while drummer Grant Young and bassist Karl Mueller made up a rock
solid rhythm section.
