ABOUT SNEAKER PIMPS
One of 1997's breakout dance artists, the Sneaker Pimps made their initial splash
via their debut Virgin album Becoming X, its sales propelled by the radio and
video success of the sultry single "6 Underground." At the forefront
of a wave of mainly-British media attention toward female-fronted, electronic-oriented
artists (other 1997 faves include Morcheeba and Moloko), the trio features vocalist
Kelli Dayton, whose torchy yet new-wavish voice is mixed quite prominently over
smooth, languorous grooves by keyboardist Liam Howe and guitarist Chris Corner.
Corner and Howe, who met as youths growing up near Manchester, England, began
collaborating on homespun musical projects around 1992, but didn't hook up with
Dayton until a few years later. Borrowing their moniker from a Beastie Boys posse
member employed to procure specialized footwear, the young trio (all three are
under age 25) signed a deal with Virgin after only playing a few live gigs. Studio
aficionados, the band's solid reputation in the trip-hop community was cemented
by the prominent artists employed to remix "6 Underground": Soul II
Soul's Nellee Hooper, Sabres Of Paradise, and Fila Brazilia.
