ABOUT SIMPLE MINDS
Originating as late-'70s punks with the decidedly ungenteel name of Johnny &
the Self Abusers, Glasgow's Simple Minds have gone through staggering stylistic
transformations during their two-decade-long history. In their first incarnation
as a pseudo-Roxy Music art-dance outfit, Simple Minds (who nicked their moniker
from a line in "Jean Genie") gained some popularity in the U.K. while
remaining largely unknown in the States. In their mid-'80s prime, Simple Minds
not only topped the British charts, but were critical and tastemaker faves in
the U.S., leading the pack of New Wave imports by releasing a pair of the genre's
best albums, New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) and Sparkle In The Rain. But what should
have been the band's finest moment, the unexpected and excessive American success
of their syrupy 1985 single, "Don't You (Forget About Me)," turned out
to be the beginning of the end, when successive attempts to imitate the chart-topper
led to their most brazenly commercial and uninspired music, a condition which
persists to this day.
