ABOUT SEPULTURA
Picking up on the gnarly, incensed vibes of American metal acts like Metallica,
Megadeth and Slayer, Sepultura began their career in the late '80s and went on
to become one of Brazil's biggest musical exports ever. The Sao Paulo quartet's
early efforts were frenzied, muscular excursions that swerved from hardcore rants
to brooding grinds backed with occasional outbursts of wanton acoustic sensitivity.
The musicianship was clearly there, as was a suitably doomy raison d'être.
What was missing was the iron-clad control of a more mature band and a more concrete
heading for the music. Matching the apocalyptic sound were lyrics that evoked
a virulent, but all too familiar, Orwellian nightmare of repression, oppression
and alienation. Though the imagery didn't change much over the next few years,
the music really blossomed.
