Formed in London in 1971, by the time of its first recording on Reprise in '72 Roxy's lineup was lead vocalist and main instigator Bryan Ferry, reedman Andy MacKay, guitarist Phil Manzanera, keyboardist Brian Eno, drummer Paul Thompson and bassist Rik Kenton, who was already the second of several players who would fill that role. The twin concerns of the group were represented on the one hand by campy, robotic rockers like "Virginia Plain" and "Do The Strut" and on the other by spacey melodramatics like "In Every Dream Home A Heartache." Eno left after the second album and was replaced by keyboardist/ violinist Eddie Jobson, but the group's first four releases ('72-'74) comprise a consistently clever and original take on modern alienation. Album number five, Siren, was transitional and their first American hit--leave it to the Yanks to catch on just as the group's edges were being beveled.
