ABOUT RONI SIZE
Although Goldie and Grooverider are the recognized godfathers of drum 'n' bass
music, it was Roni Size who brought the genre to America and gave it an identity.
Fresh off the back of his 1997 British Mercury Award for Best Album, Size and
his Reprazent crew came over with the New Forms debut double-set, talked to over
100 publications and played all over America, making sure the words "drum"
and "bass" were known by many in their new connotation. Born in the
southwestern English port town of Bristol, and DJing since the late '80s, Size
watched fellow Bristollians Massive Attack and Tricky enjoy international success
with their moody, trip-hop sound. It all strengthened Size's resolve to stay home
and break out from Bristol without heading to London. Size spent the early '90s
putting together local dance events, through which he met fellow DJs Krust, Die
and Suv. The four put together Reprazent and worked on breakbeat records in their
home studios.
