ABOUT PUCHO AND HIS LATIN SOUL BROTHERS
A black American with a passion for Latin music, Harry "Pucho" Brown (b. 1 November
1938, Harlem, New York, USA) started playing the "timbales' (an Afro-Cuban percussion
instrument) at the age of 14. In 1956 he joined the band of Joe Panama, with whom
he stayed for the next 10 years until an evening in 1966 when Panama sacked the
entire band, at which point Pucho took over as leader. Renamed Pucho And The Latin
Soul Brothers, they quickly established themselves as a popular attraction on
New York's club circuit and were successful enough to perform at Carnegie Hall
within a year. Between 1966 and 1970 the band released six albums on the Prestige
label, featuring a mix of steamy Latin funk and soul jazz, plus cover versions
of pop hits and string-laden instrumentals. Throughout the 70s and 80s they performed
as a lounge act in the hotels and resorts around the Catskill Mountains. In the
early 90s, DJs on the UK's acid jazz scene started to play tracks from the band's
Prestige recordings, and copies of the original albums began to change hands for
high prices.
