This Dallas-based quartet unabashedly brought heavy metal into the '90s. By doing
away with overblown trappings such as ridiculously elaborate guitar work and falsetto
vocalists, Pantera cut through to metal's bare bones and offered both savage heaviness
and blunt hardcore integrity. Formed in the mid-'80s when bassist Rex and brothers
Diamond (later Dimebag) Darrell (guitar) and Vinnie Paul (drums) were still in
high school, Pantera was originally a glam metal band. They released several records
on their own with another vocalist before finding New Orleans native Philip Anselmo.
Anselmo brought his love of punk and hardcore music to the group and changed it
into a mean machine of hard rhythms and ferocious attack.
