ABOUT PANJABI MC
b. Rajinder Rai, Coventry, West Midlands, England. Rai had been a producer and
remixer for 10 years on the "desi" beats scene before the huge crossover success
of his single "Mundian To Bach Ke" in early 2003. Desi music is bhangra mixed
with hip-hop, R&B, or garage, and it is hugely popular among the UK's young Asian
population. Owing in part to the enormous commercial success of "Mundian To Bach
Ke", desi ceased to be limited to its underground roots and moved onto the radio
and into the pop charts. Rai had released a number or singles and a debut "Souled
Out" on the underground Nachural label in 1993 before 100% Proof and Grass Roots
(also on Nachural) put Panjabi MC firmly on the map on the bhangra scene. In 1999,
Rai released the biggest-selling bhangra album ever, Legalised as Panjabi MC.
Sampling the throbbing synthetic bass from the theme of the 80s television show,
Knight Rider and combining it with traditional Indian percussion (such as the
dhol drum) and instrumentation and Labh Janjua's vocal delivery of lyrics in Hindi,
"Mundian To Bach Ke" was a witty, ingenious and seamless blend of the traditional,
the hip and, in its nod to Knight Rider, the kitsch.
