ABOUT NIGHTWISH
Chart-toppers in their native Finland, Nightwish was formed in 1996 by classically-trained vocalist Tarja Turunen (b. 17 August 1977), Tuomas Holopainen (b. 25 December 1976; keyboards) and Emppu Vuorinen (b. Erno Vuorinen, 24 June 1978; guitar), as
an acoustic trio. The addition of Jukka Nevalainen (b. 21 April 1978; drums) signalled the band's move into metallic territory. Initial demos were recorded and the band secured a deal with the Spinefarm label, making their debut in 1997 with the single "The Carpenter" and the album Angels Fall First. An atmospheric affair, it showcased Turunen's abilities and also demonstrated the band's folk leanings. Progress was briefly halted following the release however by Vuorinen's and Holopainen's compulsory military service, while Turunen continued her operatic studies. Sami Vänskä (bass) joined in time for Oceanborn; with Turunen's vocals once again to the fore the band constructed a progressive and symphonic sound. A huge success in Finland, the album spawned three Top 10 hits and may explain the band's inclusion in the heats for Finland's 2000 Eurovision entry with the song "Sleepwalker".
