ABOUT NATALIE COLE
Singer Natalie Cole, daughter of the late, great Nat "King", has so
far had two distinct careers--first as a successful R&B diva, and more recently
as a sophisticated pop balladeer. And while the cynical may suggest that her second-phase
career is founded on a sort of posthumous nepotism, her huge popular success has
not been dependent on nostalgia. Cole was born in Los Angeles in 1950, and while
she made her stage debut at 11, her real career began with a series of R&B
records in the mid-'70s made under the aegis of producers/writers Chuck Jackson
and Marvin Yancy. With Cole's emotive and stylistically flexible voice at the
core, this trio produced five number-one R&B hits between '75 and '77 (though
as crossover songs they did somewhat less well). But the formula soon ran its
course and this, combined with a serious drug problem, derailed Cole's trajectory
to superstardom. Instead, she spent the greater part of the '80s doing mediocre
work, and soon fell into the whatever-happened-to column.
