ABOUT MAMAS AND PAPAS
The electric folk-rock group the Mamas and the Papas was formed in 1964 by four
struggling members of the New York folk scene: John Phillips, "Mama"
Cass Elliott, Denny Doherty and Michelle Phillips. Together they headed west to
California to begin a new career, quickly signing to Dunhill Records. Working
closely with producer Lou Adler, the Mamas and the Papas recorded the landmark
If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears in 1966, charting the radio hits "Monday
Monday" and the immortal "California Dreamin'." Though their carefully
arranged harmonic pop-folk was highly accessible, the group retained underground
credibility, embracing the growing hippie movement and its "sex, drugs, and
rock 'n' roll" ideal. An eponymous 1966 follow-up and 1967's Deliver expanded
their following with more radio-friendly material, a mixture of originals and
covers that embodied mythical southern California life. Unfortunately the quartet
broke up due to internal conflicts in 1968, prematurely ending their hit streak;
chief songwriter John Phillips went on to a brief solo career.
