ABOUT HUMAN LEAGUE
Breaking through the guitar-driven cock-rock and Disco Lite that clogged early-'80s pop radio was a dirty job, but someone had to do it. That job fell to upbeat synth-popsters the Human League, who inspired countless imitators with their brazenly guitar-free sound.
The band got off to a rocky start in late-'70s Sheffield, England; the line-up then comprised three synth-playing vocalists (Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware--who would soon leave to form Heaven 17--and Phil Oakey) and an ambitious slide-projection maestro (Philip Adrian Wright). Two mediocre Kraftwelt-wannabe albums later, Oakey was the only musician left in the band. As the legend goes, he went to a nightclub to drink his sorrows away and instead discovered two dance-crazy teens, Susanne Sulley and Joanne Catherall. Immediately recruiting the girls for his live shows, Oakey set the wheels in motion for a pop phenomenon. Icily sterile, catchy and sonically a world away from everything else around it, their breakthrough album, 1982's Dare (recorded in three weeks) proved to be the band's finest moment. Spawning four top 10 singles, the king of the crop was undoubtably "Don't You Want Me." Their sound proved to be the perfect backdrop for the new (wave) generation--ironic, peppy, high-tech and imminently danceable. A 1983 follow-up EP featuring "Fascination (Keep Feeling)" found the group still at the top of their form.
