ABOUT HAPPY MONDAYS
The rise of the Happy Mondays in the late '80s and early '90s conspicuously parallels
the rise of the designer drug Ecstasy ("X") during that time throughout the U.K.
and Europe. They began as a rather straight-ahead rock band (alongside the Stone
Roses and Inspiral Carpets), but soon their loose, "baggy" blend of rock, psychedelia,
funk and dance music would prove the perfect soundtrack for "Madchester" and the
U.K.-wide dance-meets-rock movement. Though largely fueled by a drug that enabled
partyers to lose their inhibitions and stay up all night, this was nonetheless
a genuinely exciting period that saw two very disparate music communities united
like never before. At the heart of it in every way were the Happy Mondays. They
began as a gang of unemployed underachievers from the wrong side of Manchester,
England, forming a band (with stolen equipment, no less) as a way to pass the
time. It soon became a handy front as, legend has it, they started booking tours
of Europe simply as a means to distribute large quantities of "X" to a dance-club
community eager to try the new drug.
