ABOUT FAITH NO MORE
Over Faith No More's 15-year career, they seemed destined for epic success as
well as self-destruction. Neither really happened. After stints in L.A. punk bands,
keyboardist Roddy Bottum and bassist Billy Gould moved to San Francisco and, in
answer to an ad placed by drummer Mike Bordin, started Faith No More in 1982.
They recruited thrash guitarist Jim Martin and began playing the clubs in karaoke
mode--audience members handling vocal duties. For their 1985 release We Care A
lot, they enlisted Chuck Mosley, a fan that had grabbed the mike more than once.
The attention got them a deal with Slash Records and in 1987 the band released
Introduce Yourself, an underdeveloped art-rock record that never went anywhere--except
for the "We Are The World" parody "We Care A Lot." The main
problem with the record was Mosley's rapped "vocals," which were drawled
in a lazy-dude way. Thankfully, by 1990's The Real Thing, Mosley was out and the
more-versatile, almost-metal-sounding Mike Patton was in. Their most popular record
with a couple million sold, The Real Thing included "Epic"--a rap-sung,
funk-metal, big-beefy, radio-ready hit--as well as a cover of Black Sabbath's
"War Pigs."
