ABOUT EELS
In 1996, the Eels had a left-field radio breakthrough with "Novocain For
The Soul," a creepy-yet-whimsical blend of baby-mobile dementia, anesthetized
falsettos and dry humor that starkly contrasted with the Red Hot Green Pearl Bush
fodder clogging America's airwaves. However, the Eels were quickly unfairly relegated
to the one-hit-wonder "Class of '96" that included far lesser alumni
like Spacehog, Tracy Bonham and Dishwalla. Yet their forward-thinking, aptly-titled
debut Beautiful Freak--a simmering stew of homemade samples, twisted tape loops,
gorgeous orchestral flourishes and malevolent, tripped-out atmospherics--indicated
that the Eels--an inventive trio with a surprising wealth of unique ideas, plus
the pop music know-how to keep their samples and studio effects from overpowering
their lush, poignant songs--would be back with a vengeance.
