ABOUT DEF LEPPARD
Def Leppard's career has been overwhelmingly fraught with tragedy and hardship.
And yet, the band has never called it quits or let misfortune take their drive
and spirit. The British hard-rockers first signed their record deals in 1979 with
labels Phonogram (U.K.) and Mercury (U.S.), who they're still with today. They
released their first album On Through The Night in 1980, which introduced Leppard
to the States with the singles "Hello America" and "Rock Brigade."
Next in 1981, they teamed up with producer and unofficial sixth band member Robert
John "Mutt" Lange for High And Dry, which spawned the minor hit "Bringin'
On The Heartbreak." 1983 would turn out to be more, um, eventful than any
one band should have to endure. First, it brought forth Pyromania, which contained
"Photograph" and "Foolin'"; it ended up selling 100,000 copies
per week for most of that year and ultimately sold over seven million copies in
the U.S. Second, it was the year of Leppard's first ever headlining world tour.
But third, it was also the year of a tragedy so horrible most bands wouldn't have
made it through: on December 31, drummer Rick Allen's car overturned at high speed,
severing his left arm at the shoulder. The arm could not be reattached.
