ABOUT CINDERELLA
When Cinderella released their debut album, Night Songs, in 1986, they were packaged
like a second-rate Bon Jovi imitation, which isn't surprising since Jon Bon Jovi
was responsible for bringing the band to Mercury Records. Although the record
wasn't bad, it was standard lite metal without much distinction, apart from lead
guitarist/vocalist Tom Keifer's exaggerated Steven Tyler howl. With their second
album, 1988's Long Cold Winter, they began to open up their sound slightly, bringing
more blues and Rolling Stones influences to their hard rock. That approach reached
its apex with their third album, 1990's Heartbreak Station, which swaggers defiantly,
appropriating Stones and Aerosmith licks as if they had thought of the whole thing
first. It didn't sell as much as Long Cold Winter did, which might be the reason
why the band kept a low profile until late 1994. Either that or the drastically
changed hard rock marketplace of the early '90s is what kept the band from releasing
their fourth album until then. When Still Climbing did come out, the band was
met with disinterest and resistance at MTV and radio. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine,
