ABOUT CARCASS
This hardcore/death metal group from Liverpool, England, was formed in 1987. The band, all vegetarians, comprised Jeff Walker (vocals, bass, ex-Electro Hippies), Bill Steer (vocals, guitar, ex-Napalm Death) and Ken Owen (drums). The line-up was later enlarged with the addition of a second guitarist, Michael Amott (ex-Carnage). Their approach was characterized by morbid death-grunts over a barrage of chaotic, bass-dominated music. Carcass' lyrical content primarily concerns itself with mutilation, vomiting, putrefaction, intestinal rupturing and steaming entrails - all described in strict medical and anatomical terminology: "Intenacious, intersecting/Reaving fats from corporal griskin . . . Skeletal groats triturated, desinently exsiccated". Carcass signed to Columbia Records following Heartwork, which dramatically reduced previous "gore" content, incorporating a more modern image complete with H.R. Giger artwork. They also introduced ex-Devoid guitarist Carlo Regadas (Amott having departed for Spiritual Beggars), and toured the UK with Body Count, then the USA with Pitchshifter. For a band whose appeal initially seemed destined to remain of cult interest, Carcass appeared to be on the threshold of commercial success until Steer departed in late 1995. For a band that were by nature uncompromising and disturbing, but impossible to ignore, Carcass had become too commercial for Steer. His departure signalled the end for the others, Walker and Owen going on to form Blackstar Rising. Steer returned to recording in the late 90s with Firebird.
