ABOUT BECK
The ultimate post-modern atom-smasher, Beck whips a dizzying variety of styles
into a strange and appealing sonic puree. Originally perceived as a one-hit wonder
after his top 10 1994 single "Loser," the singer-songwriter has come
to be known as one of the brightest-burning talents working in contemporary music.
Born Beck Hansen on July 8, 1970, he was raised in a bohemian household in Los
Angeles (his grandfather was Al Hansen, a member of the Fluxus art movement of
the '60s). A high school dropout, Beck became immersed in the L.A. music, poetry
and performance-art scenes; his work from the late '80s showed off his eclectic
tastes in hip-hop, blues, country, folk and noise-rock. He made an immense local
breakthrough in 1993, when his indie single, "Loser," became a surprise
L.A. radio hit; that droll, self-deprecating slacker anthem, which rode a Dr.
John sample, sparked an intense major-label bidding war ultimately won by Geffen
Records. Mellow Gold, his big-time debut, went platinum, essentially on the strength
of "Loser," but its dazzling 1996 followup Odelay, produced by the Dust
Brothers and essaying a rainbow of styles, proved that Beck was a good deal more
than a one-trick pony.
