ABOUT 38 SPECIAL
38 Special were formed in 1977 by guitarist and vocalist Donnie Van Zant (brother to Johnny of the Van Zant Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd's Ronnie), with Jeff Carlisi (guitar), Don Barnes (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass) and drummers Steve Brookins and Jack Grodin. In keeping with fraternal tradition the band proffered Southern boogie/rock, though their sound later slipped into AOR. Signed to A&M Records they had little impact outside of the southern states, but in 1979 scored a minor hit with "Rocking Into The Night", which was followed by an album and major tour. With fame eluding them (despite further single success in 1980 with "Hang On Loosely"), they dropped out of the scene in 1984, but made a comeback in 1986 and recorded the film theme to Revenge Of The Nerds 2.
